Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) in collaboration with scientists at Environmental Health and Engineering, Inc. (EH&E) evaluated the ability of Trane CleanEffects™, a whole-house air cleaning system that attaches to your home’s central system, to remove human influenza A virus, which is the common flu, from the air.
These tests involved releasing the common flu virus into the air inside of a test duct. The removal efficiency was calculated from the amount of the common flu virus measured in air samples collected before and after passing through the air cleaner.

The conclusion of the testing was:
•Trane CleanEffects removed more than 99% of the common flu virus from the filtered air.

The implications of the test results include:
•Because of the similarities among types of influenza virus, the whole-house air cleaning system will remove greater than 99% of other forms of virus including influenza B, influenza C, and avian influenza (also strain of influenza A virus)
•By removing the vast majority of the common flu virus from a home’s recirculated air, the average airborne concentration of virus in the air delivered to the home through the Trane CleanEffects system will be reduced by more than 99%, thereby reducing airborne exposure to the virus for household occupants.
